The National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell has finally found a new team after agreeing to a $62 million, two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants. Ten days before the Giants play Snell’s old team, the San Diego Padres, in the regular season opener, this deal was verified by a source to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. With an opt-out clause in the contract that expires after the first season, Snell will have flexibility going forward.
After a protracted period of free agency, Snell decided to sign with the Giants. Other clients of Scott Boras, such Matt Chapman and Cody Bellinger, also signed deals after spring training started.
Snell’s signing completes the Giants’ action-packed offseason, which featured several noteworthy acquisitions. They signed power hitter Jorge Soler to a three-year, $42 million contract in February, and in December, they signed Korean center fielder and leadoff batter Jung Hoo Lee to a six-year, $113 million contract. In addition, they signed Jordan Hicks, who would move into a starting pitcher role, and traded for former Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray.

Just eighteen days before sealing Snell’s deal, the Giants secured Matt Chapman on March 1 with a three-year, $54 million contract, as part of their late-season maneuvers. After playing with the Padres for the previous three seasons, Snell returns to a division that has seen large investments, mostly from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Known for his formidable array of pitches, Snell won the 2023 Cy Young Award after dominating the league with an incredible 2.25 ERA. Notwithstanding reservations over his inconsistent play and lack of command, Snell is a talented player who would be a desirable addition to the Giants’ rotation.
The New York Post broke the news of his contract, which represents a big step forward both Snell and the Giants as they try to compete in the fierce NL West division.
