A recent report originating from Germany suggests that Red Bull has initiated discussions with Fernando Alonso regarding a potential move to their championship-winning team for the 2025 season.Verstappens on Alpine exit Alonso: "Nobody expected it but us"

According to F1 Insider, Christian Horner has made contact with Alonso, whose contract with Aston Martin is set to expire at the conclusion of this season.

Before the Australian Grand Prix last weekend, Alonso reiterated his intention to make a decision in the coming weeks regarding his future in Formula 1 for the 2025 season or potentially retiring after his illustrious two-decade-long career in motorsport’s upper echelons.

If Alonso chooses to continue competing, he will evaluate his options based on the offers he receives. However, given that he is 42 years old, he may not be viewed as a long-term prospect for teams like Mercedes, who are looking to replace Lewis Hamilton, or Red Bull, with Sergio Perez’s contract ending in 2024.

Reports from Sky Germany, as noted by consultant Ralf Schumacher, suggest that Red Bull’s interest in Alonso forms part of a contingency plan, particularly if Max Verstappen were to leave the team amid the ongoing power struggle between Horner and the Verstappen family’s camp.

Schumacher mentioned, “Horner has always been a very, very big fan of Fernando Alonso. Apparently there are big intentions in the background to bring Fernando Alonso into the cockpit next year to have another strong driver if Max Verstappen leaves the team.”Fernando Alonso 'on Red Bull's list' as Spaniard discusses replacing Max Verstappen | F1 | Sport | Express.co.uk

Considering Alonso’s extensive experience and potential to win races, particularly with a competitive car, joining Red Bull towards the end of his career could be an attractive proposition for him.

However, it’s worth noting that these discussions are speculative at this stage, and the most likely scenario could see both Verstappen and Alonso remaining with their current teams, Red Bull and Aston Martin, respectively.
