When it was revealed on Tuesday night that 2020 first-round selection Asa Lacy will miss the whole 2024 season due to Tommy John surgery, the Royals were handed a terrible blow to their injury situation.
As one of the most highly-regarded prospects in the 2020 class when he joined the club, Lacy has had a rough run of luck with injuries. This bad news is the latest. Though Lacy‘s persistent injury problems have wrecked the once-promising career, Kansas City selected him at No. 4 overall with the hope that he would one day establish himself as a frontline starter.
After recording 79 strikeouts in 52 innings pitched in High-A ball during his first season, Lacy’s command issues were mostly caused by back problems.
He seems to have a lot on his mind because his comment comes across as concentrated and determined to find his promise again. I hope Lacy recovers completely so he can return to the team the following year.
That being said, Kansas City finds it challenging to make a long-term commitment to him. He was left unprotected in the previous summer’s Rule 5 draft, and he might be taken by another team in this year’s edition. The Royals can’t afford to be unduly patient as they prepare to compete in the near future, even though it seems doubtful.
