Another insider from the Chicago Bears suggests that there’s a potential for a reunion with seasoned pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue before the 2024 season kicks off.
ESPN’s Courtney Cronin recently discussed the likelihood of the Bears bringing back Ngakoue for the upcoming season, highlighting the team’s ongoing need for additional depth in their pass-rushing department. Cronin also mentioned Ngakoue’s recovery from a December ankle injury, noting that he’s progressing well and is expected to be ready for training camps in late July.
Despite drafting Austin Booker in the fifth round, the Bears are still looking to bolster their pass rush after ranking 31st in sacks (30) last season, with the lowest sack percentage in the NFL (4.64%). Cronin pointed out that re-signing Ngakoue, who’s recovering from his ankle injury, could be a cost-effective solution to address this pressing need for the team.
Ngakoue had career-low numbers in sacks (four) and quarterback hits (seven) during his first season with the Bears in 2024. However, his performance improved after the team acquired star defensive end Montez Sweat on October 31. In the five games they played together before Ngakoue’s injury, he recorded two sacks, two tackles for loss, nine hurries, and four defensive stops.
While the Bears have added both Booker and veteran Jake Martin to their roster during the offseason, some believe that more experienced players like Ngakoue could enhance the team’s chances in 2024. Various insiders, including The Chicago Tribune’s Dan Wierderer, ESPN’s Gene Chamberlain, and former Bears scout Greg Gabriel, have voiced support for Ngakoue’s potential return, citing his familiarity with Matt Eberflus’ defensive system and his ability to provide valuable experience alongside Sweat and DeMarcus Walker while mentoring young rookies.
However, not everyone in the local media shares the same opinion. Brad Biggs, from The Chicago Tribune, expressed skepticism about Ngakoue’s fit with the team, suggesting that he appeared to be losing effectiveness during the 2023 season.
Despite differing views, Ngakoue remains a popular option for the Bears due to limited alternatives in the free-agent market for edge rushers. While players like Emmanuel Ogbah and Carl Lawson present alternatives, Ngakoue’s familiarity with the team and potential cost-effectiveness make him an attractive choice for the Bears heading into the 2024 season.
