Malik Williams has signed a new contract with the Toronto Raptors through the end of the current campaign.
The Toronto Raptors will give Malik Williams at least one more opportunity to play.
The Raptors confirmed on Saturday that Williams has signed with the team on what is effectively a one-game contract after his initial 10-day deal expired.
As Kelly Olynyk’s backup big man in the regular season finale versus the Miami Heat, Williams will probably receive some playing time off the bench for Toronto.
Williams’ contract apparently says nothing about his future standing with the organization, according to Blake Murphy of Sportsnet. Williams may be a player Toronto retains for the Summer League this offseason, but it’s unlikely the 6-foot-11 center will stay with the team through training camp the next season.
Williams has made three appearances for the Raptors thus far, starting two of them in lieu of the injured Olynyk. Despite shooting 22.2% from the field, his average per game is merely 2.2 points and 5.7 rebounds.
The Indiana native played for Miami’s G League club, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, for the majority of the previous year after going undrafted in 2022. He signed a 10-day deal with Toronto in order to help give some depth to the frontcourt in the wake of Jontay Porter’s inquiry and Jakob Poeltl’s injury.
In order to develop a player to eventually back up Olynyk and Poeltl, the Raptors are probably going to try to acquire a fresh, younger player to the front court this summer. Toronto is thin at the center position after losing Christian Koloko earlier this year, and neither Porter nor Williams are predicted to return.
