The Pittsburgh Steelers have yet to address the gap at wide receiver following the Diontae Johnson–Donte Jackson trade. However, according to Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport, Pittsburgh is among six teams that could present an appealing trade offer to the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Davenport suggests that the Steelers could offer their 2024 first and third-round picks to the 49ers in exchange for the 2023 second-team All-Pro wideout.
“Aiyuk presents a more established option compared to potential selections at pick No. 20,” Davenport stated. “Teamed up with George Pickens, he could form a formidable duo.”
While the Steelers lack a receiver who amassed more than 209 receiving yards last season besides Pickens, Aiyuk’s addition would resolve this issue. Aiyuk achieved career-highs in 2023 with 1,342 receiving yards, 17.9 yards per reception, 75 catches, and 7 touchdowns.
However, acquiring Aiyuk would not only demand significant draft capital but also a substantial financial commitment. Spotrac projected Aiyuk’s value to be around $96.1 million over a 4-year contract, translating to an average annual salary exceeding $24 million.
The need for Aiyuk in the Steelers’ roster is evident. Despite signing Van Jefferson and adding Quez Watkins post-Johnson’s trade, the duo combined for a mere 351 receiving yards in 2023.
Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger pointed out that even with Jefferson and Watkins, the Steelers lack both a starting and a No. 3 wide receiver. Aiyuk’s addition would elevate the team’s receiving corps significantly, forming a potent partnership with Pickens.
Nevertheless, there are drawbacks to acquiring Aiyuk. The steep cost in draft picks could hinder the Steelers’ ability to address other pressing needs, such as center, offensive tackle, and cornerback. Passing on potential prospects like Jackson Powers-Johnson and Graham Barton, considered top centers in the 2024 class, might not be ideal for the Steelers’ draft strategy.
Moreover, with limited immediate options at center in the draft and a sparse market in free agency, committing two top picks for Aiyuk could present challenges for the Steelers’ roster building.
