Going into the offseason, the Chicago Bears lack at least one rotational pass rusher, and they have few possibilities.
On Saturday, May 11, Greg Gabriel of SB Nation’s Windy City Gridiron sifted through the remaining free-agent pool and identified Carl Lawson, a former New York Jet, and Emmanuel Ogbah, a former Miami Dolphin and Cleveland Brown.
Although there is an argument to be made for Lawson, Gabriel pointed out that Ogbah is likely a better fit given the kind of length the Bears usually require in a defensive end.
If nothing else, Carl Lawson’s name is intriguing because he is a younger player (29) with 27 career sacks. The fact that he does not meet the Bears’ requirements for length and size in a defensive end is a drawback, according to Gabriel. Lawson lacks the length that the Bears look for in their defensive lineman. Lawson’s status as a designated pass rusher rather than an every-down defensive end is another drawback. Given that Austin Booker now embodies that quality, does Lawson meet the needs of the Bears?
