The assistant coaching jobs for the Michigan men’s basketball team seem to be filled in full right now.

Dusty May hired as Michigan head coach - Coaches Database

The hiring of Justin Joyner, the associate head coach at Saint Mary’s, by new coach Dusty May was announced on Wednesday. Jon Rothstein was the first to break the news. Joyner joins Mike Boynton Jr. and Akeem Miskdeen as the third coach hired since May assumed leadership of the Wolverines’ program on March 23.

Joyner coached the Gaels for six of his seven seasons there. He arrived at Saint Mary’s in 2017 and was appointed Director of Operations. A year later, he was promoted to assistant coach. Joyner served as associate head coach for the second season running this past season.

Joyner led Saint Mary’s to four NCAA Tournament trips and two consecutive WCC Tournament championships. He is now trying to help Michigan achieve a similar level of success.

The futures of assistant coaches Saddi Washington and Howard Eisley, as well as associate head coach Phil Martelli from the previous season, are in doubt with this hiring, which fills one of May’s three assistant coaching positions. Despite the fact that we don’t yet know what those three will do, Joyner’s hire provides a far clearer image of Michigan’s bench for the upcoming season.
