Sekhukhune United defeated Orlando Pirates 2-1 at the

Stadium on Saturday night, extending their stellar play in the DStv Premiership.

Babina Noko defeated the Buccaneers, who lost their six-game winning streak in all competitions, thanks to goals from Vusumuzi Mncube and Linda Mantambo either side of halftime. Babina Noko has now won five straight league games and moved up to third place on the log.

After a scoreless first fifteen minutes in which neither team created much of a chance, Sekhukhune presented the first real threat through Jamie Webber, who pounced on a loose ball just outside the penalty area and fired a shot that was saved expertly by Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.

The visitors produced their first opportunity on goal after twenty minutes when Relebohile Mofokeng twisted and turned in the penalty area before stinging goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare’s palms to keep out a shot from a tight angle at his near post.

Pirates looked to be controlling the game, but shortly after the half-hour mark, Vusumuzi Mncube of Sekhukhune broke the tie by running onto a deft cross into space and stabbing the ball past Chaine to take a 1-0 lead.

It took the hosts just six minutes of the second half to increase their lead after leading 1-0 at the intermission. During a counterattack, Mncube made a brilliant pass to set up Elias Mokwana for a goal. Mntambo then selflessly played a teasing ball over the goal’s face, arriving late to tuck the ball into the net for a 2-0 victory.

Pirates were given a boost by Sekhukhune’s second goal, and in the 56th minute, Tshegofatso Mabasa scored a goal to tie the score at 2-1 after slipping in at the back post to convert Deon Hotto’s low cross from the left.

After Babina Noko withdrew in defense and tried to play on the counter, the Buccaneers threatened again, hitting the post with a corner kick in the 64th minute and Mofokeng being denied by a diving save from Sangare a quarter of an hour later.

The red and white team made the right choice in doing this, as they went on to win the Premiership for the remainder of the game and set a club record.
