Leichhardt Oval’s future is uncertain, as the beloved home of the Wests Tigers urgently requires upgrades.
Despite a packed stadium during Saturday night’s victorious game against Cronulla, attention has once again turned to Leichhardt’s long-term viability as an NRL venue.
Currently, the Tigers are committed to playing there only until the end of 2024, leaving the possibility open for more matches at Campbelltown Stadium or CommBank Stadium next year.
Speaking on The Bye Round podcast, CEO Shane Richardson expressed concerns about Leichhardt’s future within the club and seeks assurances from the local council.
Richardson emphasized the need for improvements, likening the situation to the maintenance of the pyramids.
He stressed the importance of considering the club’s growth and compared Leichhardt’s amenities unfavorably with those of other NRL clubs’ stadiums.
Leichhardt Oval holds sentimental value as the former home of Balmain and remains cherished by the joint-venture’s fanbase. However, its lack of corporate facilities raises doubts about its suitability for hosting top-tier matches.
Richardson emphasized the club’s priority to play at venues that offer commercial opportunities for growth, citing the potential for increased corporate support.
Ultimately, decisions regarding venue selection will be based on the club’s economic considerations.
Before the recent win over Cronulla, Leichhardt Oval had been granted a two-year window to continue hosting NRL matches.
