Following the trade of Diontae Johnson to the Panthers, the Steelers are faced with a significant gap in their wide receiver lineup heading into the 2024 season. Tyler Boyd, the former Bengals wide receiver, stands out as a favored option for Pittsburgh to acquire, being one of the top remaining free agents.

Boyd, known for his sizable frame and adeptness in the slot position, is seen as a strong fit for the Steelers’ offensive scheme under the guidance of new coordinator Arthur Smith. However, negotiations between Boyd and the team have hit a snag.

According to insights from The Athletic’s Steelers writer Mark Kaboly on 93.7 The Fan, Boyd’s desired contract surpasses what the Steelers are currently offering him. Spotrac suggests Boyd’s market value at a three-year, $26 million deal. In the 2023 season with Cincinnati, Boyd recorded 67 catches for 667 yards and two touchdowns.

Earlier, Kaboly had indicated that some within the Steelers organization harbor reservations about bringing Boyd on board, suggesting that his signing is far from a certainty compared to a week ago. Despite Boyd’s previous interest in joining his hometown team, the situation remains uncertain.

While Boyd’s potential acquisition by the Steelers is still plausible, alternatives in the free-agent market exist, such as Hunter Renfrow, Odell Beckham Jr., Josh Reynolds, and Michael Thomas. Additionally, the Steelers have reportedly explored the possibility of trading for 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
