Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions adjusted Carlton Davis’s deal in order to free up $4.5 million in salary space, according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com.

Throughout this offseason, the Detroit Lions have ranked among the teams with the most cap room. After renegotiating Carlton Davis’ deal, the team’s new cornerback, they now have more cap space.

Ultimately, Davis’ cap charge for the upcoming season has been reduced from $14.35 million to $9.85 million, and the $4.5 million in savings will be automatically realized when the deal expires the following year, according to Meinke. “That pushes some money into a year where the salary cap is expected to grow again, and gives Detroit more financial flexibility for this season.”Lions create cap space by restructuring Carlton Davis' contract - mlive.com

Davis’ new 2024 cap hit was reported by Over the Cap to be $9.853 million.

ALLEN PARK — According to Carlton Davis, he’s willing to commit to a long-term deal with the Detroit Lions. He’ll be content with a reorganization that saves his new team $4.5 million in cap space this coming season for the time being.

Of his $14 million salary, Davis has consented to turn $6 million into a signing bonus. While the cap hit is dispersed over the term of the agreement, he will receive that money immediately. Although Davis was about to start his contract season, Detroit added three vacant years to extend the cap hit until 2027.

Ultimately, Davis’ cap charge for the next season has been decreased from $14.35 million to $9.85 million, with the $4.5 million in savings to be automatically realized when the deal expires the following year. This allows Detroit to budget more freely for this season while deferring part of its spending to a year when the salary ceiling is anticipated to rise once more.

In a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week, Davis was obtained along with sixth-round selections in the upcoming two drafts. To finalize the trade, Detroit forfeited a third-round pick.

Expected to start the following campaign, Davis has the potential to replace Detroit’s failing CB1, Cam Sutton.

Davis remarked, “Man, you’re about to get a lock-down corner.” One side of the field is about to become completely unavailable. I work in that capacity. My goal is to take these clubs’ top receiver. I’m here to take the ball away, not to deny it. You guys did play solid defense last year, too. Anticipating getting to know these people, hitting it off with them, and hopefully leading them to a Super Bowl victory.

The Lions re-signed Emmanuel Moseley and added Amik Robertson, another cornerback, via free agency. However, Robertson was the lone cornerback to sign a multi-year contract, giving the Lions plenty of leeway to still select a long-term cornerback in the draft if desired.

Although the reorganization implies that a long-term extension is unlikely to materialize very soon, Davis has also informed Detroit that he is interested in doing so.

Davis remarked, “I just got here, so it’s still early.” Would adore signing a long-term contract here. I really want to enter the building and get my feet wet before I start talking about an extension, but this is a fantastic institution that is growing. Therefore, guy, I would adore being a part of a dynasty where we might go on to win more championships in the upcoming years. One of my objectives is to build something that resembles the Lakers in some ways, similar to what the Chicago Bulls did throughout their many dynasties in the past. To be honest, I think they have a strong coaching staf, a youthful roster, and a great culture here to succeed. You see, even when we came back and won it in Tampa

There is a lot of improvement here, but you can still see the same characteristics because there are younger guys.
