A forthcoming decision looms for Marquise Davis, a coveted four-star running back and prime target for Michigan football.
Among the factors favoring Michigan football in this pursuit, the recent addition of Tony Alford as the running backs coach stands out. Alford’s transition from Ohio State to Michigan earlier in the year marked a significant move for the Wolverines. While Mike Hart had been esteemed as one of the nation’s top running back coaches, his recruitment efforts fell short of expectations. Nonetheless, he secured commitments like Jordan Marshall in the 2024 class. Now, Alford’s presence positions Michigan to potentially secure another top-tier running back from Ohio.
While Davis isn’t the highest-ranked running back in Ohio for 2025, he still holds a respectable 7th position overall in the state and 11th among running backs nationally, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.
In recent weeks, Davis has seen a surge in projections favoring Michigan football, with two crystal ball picks from 247 Sports and an On3.com prediction machine giving the Wolverines better than an 80-percent chance of securing his commitment.
Davis has made multiple visits to Michigan since Alford’s arrival, emphasizing the appeal of Michigan’s strong emphasis on running the ball for running backs.
Although the exact timing of Davis’s commitment remains uncertain, he hinted at an impending decision in an interview with Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider, stating that it would come “soon.” However, the interpretation of “soon” remains open-ended. Will it be this month? Will there be another visit before a commitment? Kentucky remains a contender, and Ohio State is striving to enter the mix. Yet, if “soon” indeed implies the next few weeks, optimism prevails for Michigan’s chances.
