As we approach the 2024 NFL Draft, there will be ongoing speculation about teams’ strategies for bolstering their rosters not only for the upcoming season but also for the long term. This includes the Philadelphia Eagles, who hold the No. 22 overall pick in this year’s draft.
The Eagles have been notably active since the onset of free agency, particularly with the acquisition of former New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley. Additionally, they’ve addressed defensive concerns by signing defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson and linebacker Devin White. This newfound flexibility provides the Eagles with options for their first-round pick.
Primarily, the team will likely focus on three positions, including wide receiver, aiming to provide further support for Jalen Hurts and the offense. Despite the signings of Gardner-Johnson and White, they remain open to bolstering their defensive back and linebacker positions.
Nevertheless, the Eagles shouldn’t squander their picks by selecting players solely based on being considered the best available. Like any team, Philadelphia has specific needs that should be prioritized in this draft.
While the Eagles have added depth to their wide receiver corps with DeVante Parker and Parris Campbell in free agency, it’s likely insufficient. They still have AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, both of whom surpassed 1,000 yards receiving last season. However, given the abundance of wide receivers in this draft, it wouldn’t be surprising if they further strengthen this position.
Securing a top-tier receiver in the first round seems improbable, as the prominent names will likely be off the board by their No. 22 pick. However, from the second round onward, starting at pick No. 50, they’ll have viable options.
One such option is Oregon wide receiver Troy Franklin, whom they might want to reconsider. Despite a standout season in 2023 with over 1,000 yards and double-digit touchdowns, concerns arise regarding Franklin’s average blocking, relatively smaller size (6-foot-3, 187 pounds), and a notable number of drops last season. Given similarities to DeVonta Smith’s skill set, Franklin may not provide the distinct attributes the Eagles require in their receiving corps.
