The “Slim” smack-talker that Duke basketball will get to enjoy is revealed in a new piece on Isaiah Evans.
Isaiah Evans’s fervor is unquestionable. Not at all. No, as a senior at North Meck High School in Huntersville, just north of Charlotte, the 6-foot-7, 170-pound wing from Fayetteville, North Carolina, repeatedly showed off his fire on the court his route to being a McDonald’s All-American and leading his team to a state championship.
In the most recent “Day In The Life” episode of SLAM, his energy and toughness are clearly visible. In the 19-minute inside look at what makes Evans a special prospect, it is mentioned that there is a body language cue to watch out for that indicates when he is about to blow up.
According to North Meck head coach Duane Lewis, “Isaiah is a passionate kid,” as stated in the video. “Oh, be careful if he begins clapping those hands [during a game]. Everyone can tell when he begins to clap his hands loudly—”Oh God, he’s in the zone right now.”
“He’s the most exceptional high school athlete I’ve ever seen. I simply believe that Isaiah has a wonderful personality. He is enraged by competition…Isaiah inspires confidence in all people.
The reason for the ardor may be primarily due to Evans’s background as a former Blue Devil one-and-done and North Carolina prep product Brandon Ingram, given his slender frame and fluid repertoire as a frequent bucket-getter. Evans endured years of bullying for, well, not being as explosive with the ball in his hands. He was forced to play on the JV squad as a freshman, but he had a passion for studying and getting better.
“I think it’s the only way I can play now,” Evans said in the piece about his motivation. Evans, who goes by the nickname “Slim” with pride and enjoys making lighthearted jokes about his opponents, said. “Dude, there was a lengthy stretch of time when I was just bad. Guys used to insult me with their words. It’s bad to be bad, dude. It truly does, I promise. When someone is massaging it in your face, it hurts much more. Yes, everyone needs to feel my presence now that I’m the kind one.
I can only obtain the complete “Slim”
Isaiah Evans, ranked No. 14 overall on the 247Sports 2024 Composite, is ranked lower than two other players in the six-deep Duke basketball class: five-star forward Cooper Flagg of Montverde Academy (Fla.) is ranked No. 1, and five-star center Khaman Maluach of NBA Academy Africa is ranked No. 6. The other three incoming Blue Devils are two sensations from Paul VI Catholic (Virginia), in five-star big man Patrick Ngongba II (No. 23) and four-star wing Darren Harris (No. 54), and five-star forward Kon Knueppel of Wisconsin Lutheran (No. 17).
