Despite some setbacks, Caitlin Clark’s professional basketball career is progressing after being selected first overall by the Indiana Fever in the WNBA draft. That’s why it surprised many when she was supposedly passed over for the Olympic team. The 2024 Summer Olympics women’s basketball team features well-known players including Brittney Griner, Breanna Stewart, and Sabrina Ionescu, according to The Athletic. Though the New York Post noted that Diana Taurasi, a guard for the Phoenix Mercury, had been battling a leg ailment, Taurasi was one of the athletes nominated to Team USA. Taurasi was going to miss four out of five games when her squad played the Clark’s Indiana Fever on July 12. Clark was well-positioned to fill Taurasi’s vacancy as a backup given her uncertain health. On June 10, Shams Charania had earlier stated that “Caitlin Clark and Brionna Jones… are top of the alternates list for Team USA if there is to be a replacement.”
