After video of a rough landing in Los Angeles was leaked, a Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental flying on a scheduled route from Frankfurt (FRA) to Los Angeles (LAX) became an unintentional online phenomenon. As of this writing, the video has been seen over 1.6 million times. It was captured on April 23, 2024, during the Lufthansa plane’s 11-hour voyage from the German capital.
The aircraft bounces after its first landing attempt, so the crew chooses to try again. The aircraft lands down a second time, swerving slightly to the right, before the nose pitches upwards, the spoilers are retracted, and the engines spool up. The previous departing aircraft, an Embraer jet that can be seen ascending straight ahead in the video, was one mile ahead of them. Los Angeles Air Traffic Control (ATC) then tells the flight to veer right to avoid it.
After that, “LH456 Heavy” is told to ascend to 2,000 feet and is then instructed to change radio frequencies to Los Angeles Departures. The airplane eventually completed a second right-hand circuit of the airfield after the first one.
