It’s finally time for Sherrone Moore to coach Michigan football in its inaugural spring game. This is the public’s first opportunity to see what he sees every day behind closed doors in practice. The roster raises a lot of issues, some of which will mostly be resolved on Saturday and others of which won’t be addressed until August’s opening day. The public should pay attention to these three fascinating groups to understand how they are preparing for the fall.
For the time being, four of the five starters seem to be locked in. With a good performance, the fifth could win the gig coming Saturday. It appears that Jeffrey Persi and Andrew Gentry are engaged in combat. Persi played at guard and tackle in five games for the Michigan football team in 2023. Gentry also gained entrance at both locations seven times. They also served time as special teams members. To be competitive, Michigan may still recruit one or two big uglys through the portal.
Depending on how coach Moore chooses to use them, all five starters may be split up on each team. There are rumors that some might not even fit in.
In the event that a starter is injured, it will also be important to keep an eye on the reserves. The best recruit in Michigan’s trenches, by far, isn’t even enrolled on college yet. Come August, Andrew Sprague might play a role, but don’t bank on it.
