Aiyuk was previously connected to the Steelers following a social media post in which he made fun of the notion that fans mistakenly believed he and Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin shared a similar appearance. Trade speculations picked up steam, but they were short-lived because it appeared as though the 26-year-old wide receiver was merely making light of the circumstance.
However, in the midst of Aiyuk and the 49ers’ contract negotiations, and with the player’s patience apparently wearing thin, the Steelers have resurfaced as a possible trade partner. It appears like the adage “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” may come to pass.
Are the Steelers considering Brandon Aiyuk?
The newest rumor claims that the Steelers have been eyeing Aiyuk since March. NFL insider Benjamin Albright recently disclosed a private text conversation indicating Pittsburgh’s intention to acquire Aiyuk to add to quarterback Russell Wilson’s arsenal.
Though it’s unclear what the Steelers would provide the 49ers in exchange for Aiyuk, it sounds exciting to think of him in the wide receiving room alongside George Pickers and quarterback Russell Wilson.
With consecutive seasons of 1000 yards in 2022 and 2023, Aiyuk is still among the league’s top receivers. He has already amassed 3,931 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns, with 15 of those coming in the previous two campaigns.
To bolster the group that includes Pickens, Calvin Austin, Van Jefferson, and Quez Watkins, the Steelers still require a wide receiver. By 2024, if they manage to acquire Aiyuk, they will undoubtedly become a serious passing danger.
