We published earlier this morning following Celtic’s release of a matchday image that appeared to allude to the significant announcement that Celtic supporters had been anticipating. Would Cal Mac kick off the game?
We now know that the artwork, which featured Celtic defender CCV wearing the captain’s armband, was undoubtedly a hint. Tomoki Iwata maintains his spot in the starting lineup, leaving Callum on the bench.
Celtic’s loss of having their captain from the start is severe. After missing six games, there has been conjecture on his true level of fitness.
At least from the beginning, Brendan Rodgers has made the choice to not take a chance on him at Ibrox. It’s obvious that the manager is adopting a practical strategy, understanding that Callum may still play a significant role in future games. It also demonstrates faith in Iwata, who has performed admirably in Callum’s absence.
This is the whole starting lineup.
Celtics against. Rangers: Hatate, Kuhn, Maeda, Kyogo, Carter-Vickers, Scales, Taylor, Iwata, O’Riley, Hart, Johnston, and Scales
Subs: McGregor, Bernardo, Forrest, Ralston, Welsh, Bain, Idah, Yang, and Nawrocki.
Reo’s return to the team and ability to maintain his position following Livingston is fantastic news. Since Luis Palma only recovered from an injury a week or two ago, there isn’t room for him on the squad. If necessary, you have McGregor, Bernardo, and Idah on the bench.
Whatever your perspective, this is a huge game, and Celtic must demonstrate their mettle.
