WTVY – COFFEE COUNTY, AL An illegal immigrant has been charged again with sexually abusing a 14-year-old.

A school resource officer (SRO) tipped off Enterprise Police about a girl being sexually molested, leading to Pablo Mendoza’s arrest last month.

Mendoza was accused of rape after his arrest.

The state has now abandoned the rape case and brought charges related to human trafficking, sodomy, and sexual abuse.

Speaking on the human trafficking charge, District Attorney James Tarbox stated, “Even on a first time offense, the range is 10 to 99 years.” “I want everyone to know that this is a serious matter. We will continue to take this as a very severe charge and circumstance.

Shelton testified that Mendoza offered the 14-year-old wine, engaged in sexual activity with her, and attempted to persuade her to flee with an unidentified guy.

“Based on what I reviewed, I can tell you without a doubt that we would have a missing 14-year-old girl and she would not be in our area if this defendant had the chance and this victim had done what he had asked,” DA Tarbox said. “I think Chief Moore feels the same way.”

Judge Josh Wilson declared he would take into consideration the evidence given to enact Aniah’s Law for Mendoza, which would prevent him from being eligible for release, after hearing the testimony and other material discussed at the hearing.

Until a decision is made, Mendoza will be held in the Coffee County Jail without bond.

Mendoza’s preliminary hearings were set for May 20 by Judge Wilson.
