USC freshman guard Bronny James announced on Instagram Friday his decision to enter the 2024 NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility. Additionally, he disclosed his intention to enter the transfer portal.

James, anticipated to make a significant impact at USC following his McDonald’s All-American honors in high school, faced setbacks due to a cardiac arrest incident in July and subsequent treatment for a congenital heart condition. Consequently, his performance as a freshman at USC was notably affected, with averages of 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in 19 minutes per game.

The departure of USC coach Andy Enfield to SMU, and the subsequent hiring of Eric Musselman from Arkansas, further adds to the transitional period for James.

Following the medical episode, James must receive clearance from the NBA’s Fitness to Play Panel before participating in team workouts or the Draft Combine in May, though he can engage in interviews with teams without this clearance. The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement mandates participation in the draft combine for invited players.

James, represented by agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, is focused on finding the right developmental situation rather than solely prioritizing a high draft position.

Should James choose to return to college and transfer elsewhere, Duquesne is reportedly a leading contender, given the connection to new coach Dru Joyce, a former high school teammate of LeBron James and a close family friend.

ESPN draft analyst Jonathan Givony previously ranked Bronny James in the top 15 of the 2024 NBA Draft class.
