With Dusty May taking over as the team’s new head coach last week, a new chapter in Michigan men’s basketball history has begun.
Although May has not yet formally appointed his staff, it is said that Georgia’s Akeem Miskdeen and former Oklahoma State head coach Mike Boynton will be working with him. May must also add players to Michigan’s roster; as of right now, just two players have committed to playing in Ann Arbor the next year.
Thirteen scholarships are awarded to DI men’s college basketball teams; therefore, as of April 5, May will have eleven scholarships available for 2024–2025 due to the players we now know are attending Michigan.
Much of this is due to the fact that it’s still unclear how May could assemble this team.
The first member of the squad from the previous campaign to officially announce that he will be playing for Michigan again next season is Will Tschetter, a crucial bench player from that campaign.
Only in-state guard Durral Brooks has reaffirmed his commitment to the team, out of the three 2024 commits under Juwan Howard.
The guards Nimari Burnett and Jace Howard are the only players still with eligibility who have not yet made their plans to participate in the upcoming season known to the public.
Burnett, who has inconsistent tendencies, was a crucial starter for the previous season and had a quick heat curve. Next season, Michigan could use his scoring return.
Given the coaching change, it would make sense for Howard to transfer, but because he attended the May introductory news conference and is almost done with his degree, it wouldn’t be strange if he stayed at Michigan.
VAfter a disappointing season, a number of Michigan athletes registered on the transfer portal, but some were still eligible to return to their home state.
Terrance Williams II, a senior forward with shooting ability, is registering for the NBA draft and testing the waters, so it’s possible that we won’t hear from him for some time. Williams is not the only starter from the previous campaign in the gateway; center Tarris Reed Jr. might play for a different team in the upcoming campaign.
The portal also features two players who saw limited action in the last year, but they could make a comeback: sophomore forward Youssef Khayat and freshman guard George Washington III.
Michigan’s top scorer from the previous campaign, point guard Dug McDaniel, has committed to Kansas State and logged into the portal.
Our portal tracker confirms that guard Connor Essegian of Wisconsin, center Danny Wolf of Yale, and guard Dante Maddox Jr. of Toledo share common interest. A few portal athletes have already heard from Michigan, and after May’s staff is set, we should expect more scholarship offers.
Not to be overlooked are the former FAU athletes who have accessed the gateway, like guard Johnell Davis and center Vlad Goldin, who may be reunited with their former head coach.
BSince many of the best candidates have already committed or have already entered the cycle at this late point, this is the hardest category to project.
However, as everyone who follows the recruitment scene is aware, candidates are always susceptible to change their minds, particularly when NIL is involved. Additionally, Mike Boynton is an excellent recruiter who might persuade some elite candidates to visit Ann Arbor, as we discussed earlier this week.
In the upcoming weeks, there should be a ton of recruiting news about the transfer site as well as high school recruiting. In the interim, let us know in the comments what you would like May to focus on when filling out this roster. Maize n Brew will keep you informed.
