The Pittsburgh Steelers made significant moves in free agency on Monday, adding depth to their defensive line and various offensive positions with the signing of four free agents.
Veteran defensive tackle Dean Lowry joined the team on a two-year contract, bringing with him seven seasons of NFL experience, primarily with the Green Bay Packers. Lowry, aged 29, boasts 15 1/2 sacks and five fumble recoveries in 120 games split between the Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. He joins a formidable defensive group led by long-time captain Cam Heyward and Keeanu Benton.
In another key signing, the Steelers secured running back/kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson for a two-year deal. Patterson, who holds the NFL record with nine kickoff returns for touchdowns, arrives from a three-season tenure with the Atlanta Falcons. A four-time All-Pro, Patterson’s arrival provides the Steelers with a seasoned veteran as they adapt to the league’s revised kickoff rules aimed at increasing return opportunities.
Additionally, the Steelers added wide receiver Quez Watkins on a one-year contract. Watkins, who spent his initial four seasons in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles, brings a solid resume with 98 career receptions, 1,249 yards, and six touchdowns.
Furthermore, Pittsburgh bolstered their quarterback depth by signing Kyle Allen to a one-year deal. Allen may contend for the third-string position behind Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, offering additional options and competition at the quarterback position.
