The NRL is considering a move for Leichhardt Oval following the NSW Premier’s announcement that funding for a much-needed renovation of the historic ground would not be provided. Paul Kent, speaking on NRL 360, mentioned discussions with ARL chief Peter V’landys regarding the potential purchase of Leichhardt.
Kent highlighted the NRL’s financial strength, suggesting they could invest in assets like Leichhardt. However, his colleague Brent Read questioned the rationale behind acquiring a deteriorating stadium.
Kent proposed that the NRL could invest in renovations using part of its profits. Journalist Dave Riccio drew parallels with the NRL’s previous purchase of a hotel near Cronulla’s ground, suggesting a strategic move to strengthen ties with the community.
Kent defended the idea of NRL ownership, suggesting the NRL could use it as an asset for various purposes. Read expressed concerns about the financial implications for other clubs if Leichhardt was rented out at lower rates to the Tigers.
