The Sheffield Steelers defeated the Nottingham Panthers 4-2 at home on Saturday night in the Elite League.
For the majority of the game, the short-handed Panthers—who were missing Mike Caruso, Loga Mike Caruso,n Neilson, and Jake Ryczek due to injuries—kept up with the Steelers, but the visitors scored twice in the third quarter to take the two points.
Between the pipes, Rok Stojanovic got things going, with backup from Luca Sheldon.
Great build-up play by Anthony Luciani and Westin Michuad allowed Alexander Lunsjö to shoot a rocket into the top corner from the left circle, giving the Panthers the lead at the first intermission (10:03).
Dominic Cormier raced quickly into the offensive zone for the visitors, who can win the league if they defeat Guildford at home tomorrow. His shot narrowly missed Stojanovic’s near-post at 20:23.
Otto Nieminein’s outstanding play in creating space and feeding Jordan Kelsall at the backdoor with a ripper of a shot for his third goal of the season gave Nottingham the lead back in the powerplay (28:10).
After just over four minutes (32:23), Colton Saucerman’s shot through traffic knotted the score at the second half.
The visitors’ game-winning play came from a brilliant pass from Patrick Watling to Mitchell Balmas in the slot (41:52), and the Steelers secured the point by forcing a turnover that allowed Josh Nichols to put the puck past Stojanovic (51:45).
Cardiff travels before hosting two games at home.
Tomorrow, the Panthers play the Cardiff Devils before returning home for a two-game weekend.
On Saturday, March 30 at 7 p.m., Panthers will host Coventry Blaze; on Monday, April 1 at 4 p.m., they will host Glasgow Clan.
