A Premier League holding midfielder is a potential £40 million replacement for Casemiro for Manchester United this summer.

According to sources, Manchester United has considered Joao Gomes of Wolves as a possible long-term replacement for Casemiro in their midfield. Gomes has been a vital member of the Molineux team since he just joined in January of last year, paying £15 million to move from Flamengo.

Additionally, the Daily Mirror reports that Gomes has been flagged as a potential possibility by United as they search for a new holding midfielder for the summer. Given his worrying decline in performance this season, Casemiro may leave Old Trafford after two seasons. A profitable relocation to Saudi Arabia has been suggested.

Physically, Gomes’ 32-year-old countryman has suffered more than he did when he was one of the season’s first signings the previous year. During his rookie season at United, he made 53 appearances, contributing seven assists and seven goals. He also scored a header in the team’s victory over Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.

He has made 21 appearances this season, still assisting two goals and scoring five, but he has been plagued by injuries and has not provided the same level of backline protection as he did in his debut season in England. United is therefore searching for a younger, aggressive midfield player to partner with the developing Kobbie Mainoo.

It is alleged that Gomes has been seen by United on multiple occasions this season, including during a recent victory over Fulham at Molineux. Newcastle and Spurs are reportedly interested in the youngster, who may fetch up to £40 million.

According to reports, Wolves are planning possible replacements in case they lose Gomes after just 18 months, since they are aware of the increasing interest in his abilities. Gomes would be a better fit for United under the new minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ideas than Casemiro.

Instead of spending a lot of money on well-established stars, the INEOS boss has made it clear that he wants United to sign players who have the potential to become elite players. They effectively achieved the same thing with £70 million Casemiro, who has only shown fleeting success in Manchester.

Pedro Neto, a winger for Wolves, has also being considered by United as a potential Antony replacement. The Red Devils also like Michael Olise, a forward for Crystal Palace. But in recent seasons, injuries have plagued both Olise and Neto.
